Unveiling the Courageous Rescue Mission in Shangri-La
In May 1945, as World War II neared its conclusion, a C-47 transport plane named Gremlin Special set off on what was supposed to be a routine sightseeing mission over the lush Baliem Valley in New Guinea, often referred to as Shangri-La. Little did the 24 service members aboard know that their journey would turn into a harrowing struggle for survival.

Filipino-American paratroopers from the 5217th Reconnaissance Battalion would be deployed to assist the survivors while a C-47 would retrieve them using gliders.
